We started our year out on beautiful Orcas Island and my sister knew just the place for us to head to cash in on a 50% off sale on shoes. Ya gotta love that! I got a cute pair of Teva’s and Glen found some Merrills so we made out. Jen got a comfortable pair of Ughh boots and a couple of others as well. All in all, time well spent. The day was incredibly blustery with wind and rain whipping the water into good size waves. Nice and dramatic.
We managed to get in a good afternoon nap and a delicious dinner of tuna steaks, brown rice and fresh broccoli before heading off to see the movie Blindside. Loved it! Absolutely loved it from start to finish. And it was just a bonus that it was based on a true story. The movie gets four stars from all of us and the rest of the crowd at the Orcas theater who applauded it at the end.
Every time we make it up to Orcas I can’t help but marvel how lucky we are to live where we do. This is one of the most beautiful places not just in the US but in the world and the San Juan Islands are some of the gems of the state. (That’s a picture from the top of Mount Constitution on Orcas at the top of the page. See what I mean about stunning scenery?) They are like a world away but really so close. And to add to that, we have a sister/brother-in-law with one of the prettiest places on Orcas and they generously share it with the rest of us. The only “drawback” at all for anxious types like me is the whole catching the ferry thing. I get anxious about catching it to go back right after we get off of it! : ) People who live on islands are clearly far calmer than me (or retired!)
Today though, we actually took our time getting to the ferry and the line was really full. In fact, in the end, between Orcas and Lopez, it was a totally full ferry coming back to Anacortes this morning. Ya gotta love this comfortable state. Looking around the ferry there were groups of friends, families of different sizes, couples — the works — and pretty much everyone, to a person, was in grubby kinds of comfortable clothes, relaxed and chatting. We’re just not a “showboat” kind of area. It was a beautiful ride back as it always is and when we got to the house Tea was still here so we got to have a good catch up chat with our girl.
Now tonight, its band practice and the gang is coming over for some bangin in the basement. Always a great (and loud!) time. I better finish this and get my Christmas decs put away so there is room in the basement to play. Happy New Year! Let’s all agree to live it with gusto!
