Vito’s and Triple Door

Okay, this post is mostly going to be a bunch more photos, but first, a little bit of background.  Our friend Rick lines up some super fun things for our group of friends to do and this year for Halloween weekend, he got us the absolute best seats in the house for a Halloween show at the Triple Door in Seattle.  We all love this venue.  It’s a small showroom, very popular, that features well known and up and coming acts alike. This time around we were booked for a burlesque type show built around Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas.”  Turns out none of us really know that story well enough to fully appreciate last night’s show but what the heck, when you’re with good friends, who cares what’s playing! The show was definitely on the funky side with a little gratuitous naked ta-tas thrown in to keep things interesting but we had fun just the same.

And we had a super blast before the show at dinner at a mafioso feeling place aptly named “Vito’s”.  What a kick that place was!  It’s kind of a low lights, red walls, old booths, mirrors on the wall, kind of place.  It has some great Italian food though and last night we might have hit it at its absolute best since our table was by the front door and people kept pouring in with every kind of costume you can imagine. Loved it!  We got to see them all. I especially loved how you could look over at the bar and see people lined up on the bar stools drinking and chatting like being dressed as a banana or vampire or 80′s rock star with real big hair was perfectly normal.  Actually, it sort of suited the place and felt, well, kind of normal.  : )  On top of that, Vito’s had live piano music going and this is a group that loves a place where the music is live.

The topper might have been though how well our own Tamy was dressed!  She was a total siren last night and, in a different time, definitely would have been Vito, the mob bosses, lady luck. : )  She spared no detail and besides her cut to there, body hugging, gorgeous navy dress, she had her hair done in a classic 40s style and added bright red nails, red lipstick and a faux fur stole.  She was the beautiful scene stealer.

Friday night plus Saturday night = another Halloween to remember!  A whole bunch of spooktacular fun!

More pics of Halloween fun!

Just had to share these with everyone too!

Costume craziness

Excellent fun at my sister and brother-in-laws Halloween party last night!  Loads of witches and ghouls and food and laughing.  Dracula, aka Rod, mixed some tasty Halloweentinis for all who wanted and Jen had wonderful soups and darling cupcakes. I got some great pics — and missed others — of the mix.  But the scene stealer, and heart stealer, once again was the youngest one there. Savanna came as the cutest Little Red Riding Hood ever!  Any wolf would have wanted to eat that cute little morsel!

Glen was in his glory as the “Masked Musician” getting to provide the background music for the soiree and keep an eye on the World Series game at the same time. I, meanwhile, tried to blend in as one of the witches — more like a cotton candy witch for me.  The WORST one there, by far, was my brother-in-law Darryl who came as some kind of horrible, well, something just horrible.  The kind of thing you look at and want to poke your eyes out! : ) Hoo boy — he just helped redefine bad.  I’m just hoping for my sister’s sake the fluorescent orange hair color comes out!

All in all, it was an excellent launch to the Halloween weekend with a blend of family, friends — and new friends.  Great job Jen and Rod!

Tonight we move on to more Halloween fun with our band friends and are heading to a burlesque show in Seattle “This is Halloween” inspired by “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”  How can that not be fun?
Meanwhile, more fun pics from last nights fun:

Kick and a punch for the first of the month!

It’s one hour till November! There’s some notable things happening this week ahead.
  • Tonight we turn back the clocks. I appreciate the extra hour of sleep but I am not a fan of the whole messing with time thing. Let’s just pick one — standard or daylight savings — and stick with it.
  • Happy Birthday tomorrow to Mitzi a wonderful friend to all her friends! She’s also incredibly smart and super talented. She needs to go on America’s Got Talent.
  • And speaking of contests, it’s time for a Pillsbury update: Tomorrow the Herald reporter is coming by in the morning and taking my picture for a short article running later in the week. oh me oh my
  • On Tuesday morning it is back to boot camp. I have to haul my lazy self out of bed and get down to the studio at 6:30. And then I gotta do it again on Thursdays too.
  • Tuesday is Election Day at last. With all the negative ads and election signs everywhere, I’m always more than ready for it to get here. Plus, its much less significant as a day anymore since all the voting is by mail-in ballot anyways.
  • Wednesday is my sisters birthday but she’s floating around off the coast of South America this week. Happy Birthday week though sis!
  • Friday is my nieces birthday. Happy Birthday week Ambyr!
  • Saturday I get my hair cut/colored in the morning and then we head over to Tina’s that evening for her very English holiday — a Guy Fawkes party. poor chap

And just like that this week will go by! Here’s a few of the highlights from this past week.

  • It was full of Halloween fun. I wore something Halloweenish to work everyday and a costume on Friday. That’s me in the bee suit above. buzz buzz
  • Poor little trick or treaters though. It POURED all day and evening long. Trick or treating was a definite bust here this year.
  • I got my Pillsbury video done and sent off on time. And I had a great talk with a very nice Herald reporter. Plus, best of all, I got a really nice email from Elizabeth Bennett who lives in Mill Creek and rocks when it comes to food challenges! She wins a lot and went to the Bake-off contest last year.
  • One morning we woke up to a ferry going by our window! I love it when they do. I ran for my camera and got a pretty decent photo.
  • We had dinner with Tea one night to celebrate her 4.0 report card!
  • And tonight we had dinner with my friends since high school, Amy and Roland. That’s them in the picture. We had a great time catching up and chowing down at Sockeyes in Monroe. Good food and good service but we were about the only ones in there. Wet weather and Halloween make for a night spent at home for most people we decided.

Enjoy your extra hour this weekend everyone!

Happy Halloween!

Eye of newt and wing of bat,
where on earth is julee at?
She dressed in black, she grabbed her broom.
She slunk away quietly out of the room
Look out your window, quick, right there!
Did you get a glance of over-bleached hair?
Did you hear a cackle? feel a chill?
See a witch out getting a thrill?
Riding her broom high and low?
In broad daylight so all will know
it’s Halloween day! Time for fun.
Time to scare little kids and make them run
home to their moms and dads and beds.
to get under the covers and hide their heads.
The witch could get them and cook them up.
Add a little cumin and pepper and have them for sup’
Oh now now little children, no need to cry
Halloween will end . . . by and by.
For now though, this day, she cackles and rides.
A big golden retriever, er, black cat by her side.
But, worry not dear reader, she’s not coming for you.
If her readers went away, what would she do?!
Still, on this spooky day she leaves you with this,
Happy Halloween! And a really, really big witchy hug and kiss!

xoxo hahahahahahahha
Trick or Treat, Give me your sweets!

A week long round-up of good time fun — & pictures!

Okay this week went flying by again and it was full of so many good things — especially this weekend — that I have been pondering what to write on. So, instead, I’m just going to list off a little bit of this and a little bit of that to give you a good idea of all the fun.

  • Friday was Bosses Day. Have you ever heard of that? I imagine it is one of those occasions that Hallmark made up to sell more cards. But I have this extremely thoughtful staff and they always remember the day. They made me a really fun poster card and took me out for Chinese food. Yum! Perhaps, most thoughtful of all, they let me go on and on about the book I’m busy writing and it was fun to get the feedback.
  • Friday night I was on to more fun because Tea and I headed to see Paranormal Activity. Okay, so the show is a little hoaky, it still scared the bejeepers out of me. Afterward, we debriefed the movie and caught up on our lives over margaritas and nachoes. So much fun.
  • It has rained and rained and rained. No I mean really really rained. Wetter than ever. There are divets in our driveway from rain running down it. It made for a fabulous morning sleeping in yesterday and when we got up, Glen and I sang songs about rain while we cleaned up the house. Well, pieces of songs about rain as we cleaned up the house. We actually thought of six with little effort. I’m trying to convince him to get his band to do a whole set of rain songs. He didn’t seem that moved by the idea.
  • But the best part of the rain, and the really strange part for the Pacific Northwest, is that it was really warm out.
  • Once we did get up and out, dad and mom treated us to breakfast with Ambyr and Nathan. It was an early birthday breakfast for Ambyr since mom/dad are headed to Phoenix this week. They got her a really cute hat and scarf. We got to hear about Nathan’s frustrations with the bank over the loan for their new house (bad bank, smart kid) and about ambitious Ambyr riding her bike to and from her job. Extremely impressive. It’s quite a ways away and it would be much easier just to drive it.
  • Next up, well it is October and that means Halloween! Our poor friends. They’re the best kind of friends you can possibly have — they indulge us (especially me!) Last night was our turn for dinner and a movie night and you know yours truly, I had to rev it on up into a full blown mini Halloween party. I know they would have enjoyed a plain ole, quiet dinner and good movies but, c’mon, it’s Halloween! An entertainment junkie can’t just pass up that kind of opportunity! So I kept the menu simple (as I have vowed to do) and just dolled up the table in a festive way. We had Mad Eye Martini Shocktails (tangerine flavored with “eyeballs” floating in them); brain jello salad; pecan sweet potato appetizers; arugula, pear and pecan salad; & taco soup with super nachoes. I made popcorn balls for dessert but Tamy bought homemade chocolate dipped shortbread that was way better. We also had Ghost of 316; Evil; Dracula’s Blood and Sinners Punch wine. Glen was the Lone Ranger and I was a witch (I know, I know — that was hardly a costume. Like I haven’t heard that before : ) ) We finished it all off watching Little Shop of Horrors and Young Frankenstein. Great night!
  • But hold on, the weekend doesn’t stop there. This morning mom/dad came over and watched me make my Bake-off entry — gotta practice, practice, practice. Then we headed over to Lake Stevens to see our favorite baby anywhere. Oh my gosh, did you check out the picture here? That baby gets cuter and cuter! And her great grandma looks pretty happy too. On the bad news side of things, we didn’t get to see Kinga because her grandpa in Poland died unexpectedly this weekend and her family is together mourning the loss of this beloved family member. He lived a full life but it all goes by too fast. I never got to meet her grandpa but I felt like I knew him a little bit from all the times Kinga has talked about him and how much she loved him.
  • Lastly, despite the rain, the fall colors around here are the best!

How about your weekend? Hope you’re enjoying each October day.
