a tribute to a friend

Life is full of comings and goings. I’m a girl who does best with the comings but it is also so important to honor the departures and this post is about another friend who left us this week, Pat Bagan.

We met Pat through her son, Rick, our good friend and drummer in the Heart of Gold band with Glen. Which means Pat is also connected to others you regularly hear about (and see!) on this blog, Tamy (Pat’s daughter-in-law), Brie (her granddaughter) and Maggie (Pat’s daughter.)  These are all people near and dear to our heart so it was almost inevitable that Pat would be as well.

Pat was tough, independent, spirited and loved to talk books which I loved. She lived with Rick and Tamy while Brie was growing up and Brie got her strong love of books directly from her gram. She was kind and supportive of my own book writing efforts clear to the end and I will think of her fondly each time I start a new book.

In the end, Pat was in a great deal of discomfort and awful pain and her daughter Maggie put her passing best I thought when she shared with me about losing her mom that she was “heartbroken but relieved for my mom.”

But as Rick told me “hers was a life well lived” and that is a great thing to have said at the end of any of our lives here on earth. I know Pat added to mine and to Glen’s and we are better for knowing her. Sitting here even now, the fun times together make me smile. Thanks Pat!

(Just a final note here to say that Pat was lovelier than my pic above. I’m just an inconsistent photographer.)
