a big bang birthday

Except for the year I turned 16 and couldn’t get my drivers license till the next day (so funny thinking about that now!) I have loved having a 4th of July birthday. I mean how lucky can a girl get? You get the day off.  It’s summertime. Its far away from Christmas so you’re ready for some fun gifts.  There’s a parade! There’s picnics! There’s fireworks! Everyone is in a good mood. Everyone but dogs that is and that is the low point of having a 4th of July birthday — you always are worried about your loved pet.

Like many dogs, Dandy is TOTALLY freaked out by fireworks. And I gotta tell you, for an area where fireworks are banned, I don’t think there could have been many more of them going off last night. Rough time for sure. When we were smaller it wasn’t so bad. Pretty much you had sparklers and cones — nothing particularly loud. But nowadays, it’s all about the big bangers and rockets. I don’t personally like the loud but the rocket fireworks are always pretty. Having a dog though has reshaped my birthday in unexpected ways. It’s always a really great week of fun things happening but the actual evening is something to be endured more than enjoyed.

On the positive side of things though, I have to just mention again how much fun facebook is during a birthday. You get to hear from so many people you normally wouldn’t and I think it really adds to the fun. I had so many people remember me yesterday and it was a very nice touch to the day.

So, happy birthday to America and me! We’re quirky, independent sorts — like most people I think actually. Thanks so much to my family and friends who all help me feel completely loved all the time but most especially this time of year.
